Football Betting Glossary

Action - This is when you wager money on the outcome of a game, it is a sports bet.

ATS - "Against the spread," this is when you take points instead of wagering with the point spread.

Book - These are the places that accepts your bets for sports gambling.

Bookie - This is your personal connection to the book (sportsbook).

Buck - Sports betting term for a $100 wager. Ben Franklin is a buck.

Buy Points - Sports betting allows players to pay a fee for a bonus points to be added to their point spread.

Chalk - The favored winner in a sporting event

Cover - In sports betting this refers to when a team wins the game and wins by more than the point spread.

Dime - $1000.00 sports betting wager or ten bucks or 10 ben franklins

Dog - This is the team that is expected to be most likely to lose.

Double Bet - In sports betting a double bet is a wager for twice the size of one's usual wager; also known as "double pop" or "doubling up."

Even Money - This is when a sporting event does not favor either side. The odds are 1 to 1.

Future - These are sports bets that are made for events in the distant future. For example predicting next years super bowl winner would be a future bet.

Handicapper - These are the researchers that pour over the data and make the best informed decision on which games to bet on.

Handicapping - This is the process of researching sports event so you can gamble on the outcomes.

Line - This is the current betting odds. These are commonly printed in the sports section of newspapers.

Money line - These are the odds that are written in terms of money.

Opening Line- This is the starting odds of a sporting event. As the start time approaches of a sporting event the opening line normally changes.

Parlay - In sports wagering, this is when your bet requires multiple teams to win in order for you to win and receive higher payouts.

Sportsbook- a person or company that accepts bets.

Teaser - These are special parlays in which you gain more favorable point spreads along with a lower pay off.

Vig - This is the fee or commission paid to the bookmaker on a bet.
